Background

History of the Schweighofer Group

For the Schweighofer family wood processing has a long tradition, which was handed over from generation to generation. The first related remark in official documents was made in the year 1642.

1956 – From handcraft to industry
The actual success story starts in 1956, when Franz and Maria Schweighofer take over the family owned saw mill in Brand, Lower Austria. At that time the annual mill capacity is about 1.000 m³.

 

1976 – A new generation
Son Gerald Schweighofer starts his career in the company.

1977 – Worldwide unique
Due to the innovative spirit of Gerald Schweighofer and his readiness to assume a risk he opens the worldwide unique profiling line for small diameter logs at the headquarters in Brand/Austria.

1984 –  Schweighofer sets a new standard
Holzindustrie Schweighofer opens Europe’s largest saw mill (at that time) in Ybbs an der Donau/Austria.

1991 – Always a step ahead
After take over and enlargement the saw mill in Sollenau/Austria starts processing.

 

1996 –  Over the border
Holzindustrie Schweighofer takes over in Zdirec the biggest and most modern saw mill in the Czech Republic.

1997 –  New dimensions
After taking over the saw mill Bad St. Leonhard/Austria and another saw mill in Plana/Czech Republic, Holzindustrie Schweighofer has reached a total sawing capacity of 3 Mio. m³ in six different mills.
Moreover, the glue lam mill Lamco was built in cooperation with the japaneese company Maiken and the Schweighofer Privatstiftung was founded.

 

1998 - Merger with Enso Timber
Holzindustrie Schweighofer merges with Enso Timber and becomes the third largest saw milling company in the world!

 

2001 – Sale
Schweighofer family sells its shares and hence all saw mills in Austria and Czech Republic to Stora Enso Timber.

 

2003 – New start in Romania
Holzindustrie Schweighofer starts production in the new and modern saw mill in Sebes/Romania.

The first Schweighofer Prize was awarded.

2006 – Top 5 in Japan
Holzindustrie Schweighofer regains its position under the European top 5 timber suppliers for Japan. The company delivers its products in over 40 countries all over the world.

2007 - A new hotel for Radauti
Opening of the 4 stars hotel The Gerald´s in Radauti/Romania.

2008 – Second saw mill in Romania
After finalization the second saw mill in Radauti/Romania starts ordinary operation.

2009 – Take-over of Romanian Swedwood manufactory
The Romanian Swedwood manufactory is taken over in Siret, close (12 km) to the second mill in Radauti.  After modernization and enlargement of the mill solid wood panels are produced there.

2010 – Take-over of Finnforest BACO
Holzindustrie Schweighofer BACO produces blockboards and concrete formwork panels in the previous Finnforest factory in Comanesti.

2011 – Take-over of M-real Hallein
Schweighofer Group buys M-real Hallein GmbH in Austria. Future production on the site will be focusing on highgrade cellulose and bio-energy.
